Selangor is Malaysia's most populous state with approximately 7 million residents, and consequently handles the highest volume of family law cases outside of Kuala Lumpur. The state surrounds the federal capital, and its major population centres — Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Klang, and Ampang — are home to a large and diverse population that files thousands of divorce petitions, custody applications, and maintenance claims each year.

Like all Malaysian states, Selangor operates two parallel family law systems. Non-Muslim marriages are governed by the civil courts under the federal Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976. Muslim marriages fall under the Islamic Family Law (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003, administered by the Syariah courts. The Selangor enactment covers marriage, divorce (including talaq, fasakh, khuluk, and ta'liq), maintenance, custody (hadhanah), and division of matrimonial property (harta sepencarian). Understanding which system applies to you is the critical first step in any family law matter.

Selangor also has a well-established legal aid ecosystem. The Selangor Legal Aid Centre (under the Bar Council) and the national Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) both operate in the state, providing free or subsidised legal representation for those who qualify. For Muslim family law matters, the Jabatan Bantuan Guaman (JBG) Selangor office offers mediation and legal advice at no cost.
